Negotiate a job offer across countries and currencies
Normalize the offer first
Write down the base salary, pay frequency, currency, guaranteed allowances, variable compensation, equity, insurance, leave, working hours, probation, notice, and relocation support. Separate guaranteed value from targets or discretionary benefits. Confirm whether amounts are gross or net and which taxes or social contributions apply to you.
Compare like with like
Convert annual values using one stated exchange-rate date, but do not stop at currency conversion. Housing, transport, healthcare, schooling, and required travel can change the practical value. Also consider employment status: an employee package and an independent-contractor rate carry different costs and protections.
Build an evidence range
Use several relevant sources where possible, then narrow them by city, seniority, function, company size, and work arrangement. Your range should reflect the responsibilities of this role and your evidence, not only your current salary. Treat anonymous salary submissions and AI estimates as signals that require verification.
Make a clear request
Express enthusiasm, summarize two or three reasons you fit the role, then ask for a specific adjustment or range. If base pay is fixed, prioritize the items that matter most: sign-on payment, review date, remote days, leave, title, training budget, or relocation terms. Do not invent another offer or disclose confidential documents.
Ask for the final package in writing and allow time to review it. A calculator can organize assumptions, but local tax, labor, immigration, pension, and end-of-service rules require current official or professional advice.
